On the first day the presentation was by the Kathak students beautifully draped in natural green costumes. The Kathak discipline has been the most recent addition to the Natya Vidyalaya and the young students did full justice to the composition “Har Har Har Mahadev”, a Shiv Stuti. This was followed by a special performance by Smt. Ananya Govitrikar, faculty at the Vidyalaya, to showcase the intricacies of Kathak discipline. The piece, called a Tarana, choreographed by her Guru Pandita Smt. Shama Bhate, highlighted her graceful expressions, lightning fast moves, as well as her intricate footwork.

Next was “Lambodara”, in allegiance to the most loved God of Hinduism Shree Ganesha, was performed by the younger group, with the simplicity and melodic beauty evoking the devotional mood of the audience. “Mahalakshmi”, the popular kritis in Sankarabharanam, was brought to life with a visualization of the ‘samudramanthan’ or churning of the milky ocean and the emergence of Goddess Mahalakshmi in all her divine beauty, followed by the celestial wedding of Mahavishnu and Mahalakshmi. The finale Karakattam, a folk number was a special visual treat where the dancers balanced the ceremonial pot on their heads while dancing to the traditional south Indian folk melody.

On the following day the students of the Sangeetha Vidhyalaya displayed their art by presenting flawless renditions of kritis and also showed their prowess at manodharma singing. This was followed by an absolutely power packed jugalbandi by Mrudangam, Kanjira and Tabla students. The punchy korvais and rhythmic conversation between the two factions brought out their expertise and command over Talam.

Principal Smt. Shyamala Sajnani, and convenor Smt. Anupama Devarajan coordinated the entire event.
