Bar Council of India sets up India s first law teacher training institute

Legal profession is one of the most sought after career options among young college students in India. Around 2.5 lakh students pursue law in approximately 100 law colleges every year, and there is a dearth of trained law teachers.

Keeping this in view the Bar Council of India (BCI) has undertaken an initiative to set up India’s first law teacher training institute – Indian Institute of Law (IIL) – in collaboration with Kalinga Institute of Industrial Training (KIIT) at Bhubaneswar.

BCI’s move has drawn praises from three Supreme Court Judges – Justices U U Lalit, B R Gavai and V Ramasubramanian. IIL is expected to be a state-of-the-art institution imparting legal education, research and enhancing skill development of lawyers, researchers as well as teachers themselves.

Currently in India there aren’t any focused colleges / institutions to promote skill development of law teachers and advocates. IIL once fully functional is expected to bridge this gap.
