Vinesh Phogat Resigns From Railways, Likely to Join Congress, Contest Haryana Polls

New Delhi: Former wrestler Vinesh Phogat on Friday tendered her resignation from Northern Railways, where she served as the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) Sports in level 7.

“Serving Indian Railways has been a memorable and proud time of my life. At this point in my life, I have decided to separate myself from the railway service and have submitted my resignation to the competent authorities of the Indian Railways.

Vinesh Phogat expressed her deep gratitude towards the Indian Railways, acknowledging their significant role in her life and career. She wrote on X, “I will always be grateful to the Indian Railway family for this opportunity given to me by the Railways in the service of the nation.”

Vinesh Phogat is poised to embark on a new journey in the political arena. She is expected to join the Indian National Congress and contest in the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections.

On Wednesday, Vinesh and Bajrang Punia met with the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi. The meeting comes one day after the Congress’ Central Election Committee (CEC) met to finalise the candidate list for the October 5 elections.

Congress is considering offering Vinesh either the Charkhi Dadri or Julana seats.

The ace wrestler missed a gold medal in the women’s freestyle 50kg division at the Paris Olympics after being disqualified in the final for being 100gm overweight, a controversial decision that sparked a debate in the sports community.

After the heartbreaking incident at the Paris Olympics, Vinesh Phogat, displaying her characteristic resilience, took to social media to announce her retirement from wrestling.
