It’s an old adage: “An apple a day…keeps the Doctor away”. This is true for all ages, irrespective of whether we are in a pandemic or out from it. The things that go into your body determine your health and well-being and those who overdo or don’t care end up on hospital beds.

For the coronavirus pandemic let’s be clear that there is no scientifically proven food to cure it thus far but doctors and nutritionists are advising according to the food habits prescribed for general illnesses which may be helpful for coronavirus patients as well.

Since it has been found that people with less immunity is likely to fall prey to coronavirus, World Health Organization (WHO) advocates healthy eating habits to strengthen one’s immune system. WHO states the need for vitamins and minerals to fight Covid-19 and this includes:

Having best fruits and vegetables with high counts of Vitamin C (citrus and greens), beta-carotene (orange root vegetables), antioxidants (berries), and vitamin E (avocado). The WHO also recommends whole grains and legumes which are a great source of complex carbohydrates, food with high-protein content (beans, chickpeas, lentils, etc.).

It also advises to have Vitamin E paired with Vitamin C rich fruits such as apples besides food rich in vitamin B-12, riboflavin, calcium, iron, and zinc, coming from dairy products, animal by-products (such as eggs), and meat. It is also advisable to keep drinking hot water intermittently throughout the day.

Apart from controlling food habits it is also important to practice Yoga and Pranayama (breathing exercises) on empty stomach, brisk walk in the morning and some amount of jogging if possible.

Furthermore, one also needs to stay away from crowded places, shun public transport, take a bath as soon as you come back home and wear fresh clothes. Clean your house and surroundings and keep washing your hands frequently with a hand-wash. Avoid physical contact as much as possible and if you practice all these then even if the virus enters your body, your system can easily tackle it and overcome it.

Avoid hospitalization at any cost, remember there are no ICU beds, oxygen cylinders are in short supply, Remdesivir injections are out of stock, and why pay exorbitant bills when things can be treated by yourself if you are careful.
