There is so much more to the art and practice of yoga than its health benefits. On the occasion of World Yoga Day—celebrated every year on 21st June, here are five things that define yoga, that define our life. The discipline in balancing asanas in yoga requires becoming one with the stance through concentration and strength. If we lose balance, we can always recenter and try to get back on. In doing so, our thoughts and emotions perfectly align themselves creating an equilibrium. Similarly, in any situation that we may face in our lives, we should recenter and conquer!

While practicing an asana, one is told to feel the stretch in the muscles. We know the strain is going to benefit us when we slowly stretch ourselves to our full potential. Yoga teaches us the composure and the ability to mindfully reach our decisions rather than hastily jump to them.

It is natural to hold breathing unconsciously while doing a difficult asana and the key is to keep breathing and let the moment pass. Release the negativity through the exhalation and inhale positive energy to face whatever challenges come our way. It gives us the ability to control our thoughts with every breath.

Yoga directs our focus inward and allows us to listen to all the signs that our body is giving us. We may learn to connect with our bodies and develop a deeper appreciation for them with practice. It motivates us to do what is right for us and, by extension, for our surroundings.

When we become aware of our body during a pose, we can sense the tension in certain parts of our body — by making a conscious effort, we can release it. When confronted with a challenging situation, it is critical to let go of tension in order to think clearly and find a way out.
