New Delhi: In a medical marvel, surgeons at a government hospital in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, performed a complicated brain surgery — awake craniotomy — as the patient watched a Jr. NTR film.

Awake Craniotomy is a method in which the patient stays conscious throughout the procedure.

Ananthalakshmi, 55, underwent surgery for a brain tumour at Kakinada’s Government General Hospital (GGH). She had been experiencing symptoms such as numbness in her limbs and recurrent headaches before being diagnosed with a 3.3 x 2.7 cm tumour on the left side of her brain.

Due to the expensive cost of therapy at private hospitals, she picked the government hospital for the procedure.

The medical team actively involved Anantalakshmi in her own surgery, showing portions of Jr NTR’s Adhurs, her favourite film, to keep her calm and focused during the procedure.

The doctors successfully removed the tumour in a two-and-a-half-hour operation, bringing hope to patients with similar conditions. The doctors expect the patient to be discharged within five days.

Awake craniotomy, often known as awake brain surgery, was initially used to treat epilepsy but is now more commonly utilised for tumour removal.

When the patient is conscious, the neurosurgeon can maximise tumour resection while preserving neurological function.

A week ago, surgeons at Uttar Pradesh’s Kalyan Singh Cancer Institute did a similar surgery to remove a tumour.

Throughout the innovative procedure, the 56-year-old patient remained awake and engaged with his mobile phone, lowering the chance of nerve injury.

In January of this year, a five-year-old girl underwent awake surgery at AIIMS Delhi to remove a fatal tumour from her brain.

During the complicated procedure, the girl communicated with the physicians and recognised a picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
