The Russian developed vaccine Sputnik V has received permission from the Indian drugs regulator for restricted emergency use in the country. The vaccine was developed in Russia’s Gamaleya institute and is marketed in India by Dr. Reddy.

The Gamaleya institute said that during a study conducted by them to study and understand the various variants, they saw that Sputnik V would produce protective neutralizing traits against different variants such as Alpha (B.1.1.7) – first identified in the UK; Beta (B.1.351) – first identified in South Africa; Gamma (P.1) – first identified in Brazil; and Delta (B.1.617.2 and B.1.617.3). Even though this Russian-made vaccine is still developing, this vaccine would be effective against all the new variants of the coronavirus.

The study methodology of this research was based on the assessment of virus-neutralizing activity (VNA) using the live virus. It was also seen that the sera were obtained from individuals after vaccination with two doses of Sputnik V., This vaccine is also two-dose shots, which is 91.6% effective in preventing serious illness, according to the phase 3 clinical trials.

The vaccine has so far been registered in 67 countries globally with a total population of over 3.5 billion people. It is also been marketed in India now by Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd, who has said that Sputnik V will be commercially launched in the coming week in India.

The process has already started in Hyderabad, this soft launch rollout of Sputnik V has scaled up speedily and reached cities and towns all over India- including but not limited to Hyderabad, Vizag, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, NCR, Chennai, Miryalaguda, Vijayawada, Baddi, Kolhapur, Kochi, Raipur, Chandigarh, Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, and many others.

Currently, the Indian Drug Regulators have made the rule that Sputnik V will only be granted to those who are in dire need of this vaccine. It is to be restricted for emergency use only.
