New Delhi: In an inspiring tale of compassion and humanity, a Hindu family gave a new lease of life to a Muslim man with liver cirrhosis by donating the liver of their brain-dead son, a Delhi hospital announced on Tuesday on the occasion of World Organ Donation Day.

Cirrhosis is a condition in which the liver gets scarred and becomes permanently damaged.

Ahmad Abrar was diagnosed with Hepatitis B by medical professionals at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. In addition, he displayed symptoms of severe liver cirrhosis, such as internal bleeding, ascites, and jaundice brought on by a buildup of fluid in the abdomen.

Abrar ran his store and engaged in social events, leading an active life despite his physical limitations. But as his illness deepened, it started to affect both his personal and work life negatively.

The hospital’s chairman of medical gastroenterology, Anil Arora, immediately suggested a liver transplant. Abrar had a particularly high-risk procedure because his long-standing cirrhosis caused heart and lung problems that further exacerbated his condition.

Due to the limited operating space caused by Abrar’s contracted right limb from polio, the surgery was incredibly challenging.

However, he got a life-saving transplant from a brain-dead young man at the same hospital. His family made the selfless decision to donate his organ to save Abrar, showing that humanity can often come out in the most unexpected situations.

The doctor said Abrar was discharged from the hospital after 15 days, adding that he has since returned to his job and made a full recovery.

Every year on August 13, the world observes World Organ Donation Day to highlight organ donation’s significance and debunk myths about it.

Less than one organ donor per million persons is the shockingly low rate of cadaver organ donation in India. By comparison, 70–80% of deceased organs are donated in Western countries.
