Hanoi: Despite the grim situation, ongoing rescue and relief efforts are underway, instilling a sense of hope in the face of this tragedy. Super typhoon Yagi and its accompanying floods and landslides in Vietnam’s northern region have claimed at least 82 lives as of Tuesday early afternoon, with 64 more still missing, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Cao Bang, a hilly region, has suffered the worst, with 19 dead and 36 missing, according to Xinhua. Additionally, 19 people died in Lao Cai, 22 in Yen Bai, and nine in Quang Ninh.

Despite the widespread devastation, the Vietnamese people have shown remarkable resilience. Other deaths occurred in the capital, Hanoi, Hai Phong City, Hoa Binh, Hai Duong, Lang Son, Tuyen Quang, Ha Giang, and Lai Chau provinces.

According to the ministry’s Department of Dyke Management and Disaster Prevention and Control, typhoon Yagi with powerful winds, damaged 48,337 houses, mostly in the coastal province of Quang Ninh and Hai Phong city. The typhoon also caused significant damage to roads, bridges, and other infrastructure, further exacerbating the situation.

The country is reeling under the forceful impact of the dreaded storm. Reportedly, wind blowing at 200 km per hour has lashed the country. A video shows how an entire bridge fell into the water below, swallowing the cars and bikes passing over it, highlighting the severity and urgency of the situation.

In another visual, an entire shed on a roof was torn and flew away like paper in the air.

There was a video of hotel staff trying to protect themselves from the raging storm outside by holding onto the doors with all their might.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said the northern region is expected to see rising water levels on Tuesday and Wednesday, with several rivers reaching the highest alert level. In response, the government has mobilised rescue teams and relief supplies to the affected areas, and international aid is also being coordinated to support these efforts.
