United Nations: Countries Endorse India’s UNSC Permanent Seat Bid. At the General Assembly’s high-level meeting, the majority of leaders advocated for urgent Security Council reform. Three countries, in particular, emphasised the need for India to be given a permanent seat, underscoring the urgency and importance of this issue.

Micronesia’s President, Wesley Simina, highlighted on Thursday that the Council’s struggle to address significant security and peace concerns shows the need for thorough change.

“It is time for permanent membership of the Security Council to be expanded to include Japan, India, Germany, Brazil, and representation from the African continent,” he said.

Portugal’s Prime Minister Luis Montenegro voiced his support for the permanent admission of two countries with historical ties to Lisbon: India and Brazil.

Britain’s Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has expressed strong support for India’s inclusion as a permanent member of a revamped United Nations Security Council (UNSC), alongside permanent African representation, Brazil, Japan, and Germany, and more seats for elected members.

“If we want the system to deliver for the poorest and most vulnerable, then their voices must be heard. We need to make the system more representative and more responsive to those who need it most. So we will make the case not just for fairer outcomes, but fairer representation in how we reach them. And this also applies to the Security Council. It has to change to become a more representative body, willing to act — not paralysed by politics. We want to see permanent African representation on the Council, Brazil, India, Japan and Germany as permanent members, and more seats for elected members as well,” Starmer said while addressing the general debate at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

In earlier sessions this week, Chile’s President Gabriel Boric Font and France’s President Emmanuel Macron backed India’s quest for a permanent seat on the Council.

Two other permanent members of the Council, the US and Russia, are also backing India.

The Importance of UNSC permanent seat for India

If India were granted a permanent seat, it would have UNSC veto power, which would be extremely advantageous. The permanent members of the Security Council use their veto power to safeguard their geopolitical interests on the world stage. They can ignore any UN resolution against them by exercising their veto power.

Earlier this year, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confidently stated that India will undoubtedly gain permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council, given the overwhelming global consensus in its favour.

Significantly, as the world’s fifth largest economy, on track to become the third largest, and with the largest population, India is seen as a beacon of hope in the global community. The world believes India is not just developing but also capable of making significant contributions to resolving global challenges.

When the United Nations was founded roughly 80 years ago, five countries—China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States—decided to become permanent members of its security council.

At the time, the world had approximately 50 independent countries, which has now grown to around 193.

However, these five nations have maintained their grip,

Recently, the United States supported India’s ambition for a UNSC seat. China is the sole country (among UNSC Permanent Members) that opposes India’s accession to the UN Security Council.
