New York: World No. 1 Jannik Sinner defeated American No. 1 Taylor Fritz, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5, to win his maiden US Open and second major title.
Sinner’s name is now etched in the annals of tennis history, as he became only the fourth man to win the Australian Open and US Open on hard courts in the same season, joining the illustrious company of Mats Wilander, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic.
Sinner has already won a Tour-leading six championships in a brilliant 2024 season, according to ATP statistics. This puts him 4,105 points ahead of his nearest challenger, Alexander Zverev, in the ATP Year-End No.1 race.
For the first time in 47 years, the Italian won both Grand Slam titles in the same season. Sinner is the third player in the Open Era to win his first two Grand Slam championships in the same season, after Jimmy Connors (1974) and Guillermo Vilas (1977).
In the twenty-first century, only the dominant Big Three—Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Carlos Alcaraz—have won several major titles in the same season. Sinner can now join that list.

Carlos Alcaraz’s wins at Roland Garros and Wimbledon this season mark the first time since 1993 that a player under 23 has won all four majors in the same year.
Fritz aimed to become the first American male to win a major title since Andy Roddick did it at the US Open in 2003. Despite his final loss, the 26-year-old can reflect on his best performance at a Grand Slam tournament, which has also moved him up five ranks to eighth in the ATP Live Race To Turin.
“This title means so much because the last period of my career was really not easy. I love tennis, I practice a lot for these stages. I understood, especially in this tournament, how important the mental part is in this sport. I’m very happy, very proud to share this moment with my team,” said Sinner after his title triumph.
