New Delhi: Anjali, a three-year-old toddler, was killed, and a 65-year-old woman was critically injured in two separate wolf attacks in Uttar Pradesh’s (UP) Bahraich district early Monday.

So far, at least eight children and one woman have died, while 50 others have been injured in frequent wolf attacks in the Bahraich district.

Despite the administration’s assertions that it is monitoring every inch of the area with special teams armed with drones, unique technologies, and thermal imaging cameras, incidences of man-animal conflict are increasing owing to wildlife habitat destruction, and wolves are still attacking local inhabitants.

The 65-year-old woman was attacked by a wolf in the early hours of Monday, resulting in serious injuries. She was sent to the medical college for treatment. The incident took place at the Hardi police station in Mahsi, Bahraich.

According to family members, the incident occurred when she went outside her residence at night to answer nature’s call.

Suddenly, an unseen wolf attacked her.

Doctors treating the elderly woman in the medical college’s emergency room said she was stable.

The latest occurrence has sparked concerns among people about the UP administration’s ability to regulate the situation and put an end to the man-animal conflict and the terror created by the wolves.

A wolf also killed a toddler in the Mahsi section of the Bahraich district. Anjali, three, was asleep with her mother when the wolf carried her away quietly.

When the mother noticed her missing child, she began crying for help, waking the villagers up.

They began searching for the child, and after some time, her lifeless body was discovered in a neighbouring sugarcane field.

The villagers are scared due to the wolves’ continuous attacks,  and they demand that the wild creatures be captured as soon as possible.

According to an official, the forest service has already captured four wolves from a pack of six as part of ‘Operation Bhediya’.

Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, has directed authorities to take action against the frequent wolf and leopard attacks in specific districts of the state.

He stressed the need to catch and tame these animals and improve public awareness of safety precautions.

The Forest Minister has been entrusted with deploying senior officials to districts where there have been man-animal conflicts, as well as augmenting manpower in Bahraich, Sitapur, Lakhimpur, Pilibhit, and Bijnor.

Joint patrolling by all appropriate departments will be increased, and plans will be made for Petromax lighting in rural areas experiencing light problems.
