I grew up in a family of many ladies, seeing my beautiful mother, grandmother and aunt regularly wearing sarees for almost all occasions. Saree is frequently worn by women in the Subcontinent. Sarees bring out the best in us, age is no barrier – be it farewell in School or Traditional Day in office, old or young there is an unparalleled charm and grace. Did you know Saree is developed from the Sanskrit word “Shati”, meaning a strip of cloth? The rustle of silk has fascinated most women from time immemorial, all around the world, be it a queen or a commoner. Indian silks were popular across the world from ancient times till the present day. Textiles from the Subcontinent is as “vast and enchanting, as an ocean of many tempting colors”. Silk in the Indian Subcontinent is a now considered a luxury. The silk is called as “paat” in East India, “Resham” in the North and “pattu” in the South.

India is a known as a country of remarkable variety and a unique liveliness. In its spellbinding background of clothing styles and colorful clothes, the silks of the Indian Subcontinent stand out with their soft textures and aesthetic appeal.

Most of us can buy sarees up to maybe Rs 20,000. A bridal saree may cost up to a lakh. How many times have you come across a pure silk saree, that costs Rs 5 Million (US$75,000)?  Such a saree was made by Chennai Silks, a textile shop in Chennai had come up with one such saree collection. This saree made its entry into the Guinness book of World Records, for being the most exclusive and expensive saree, ever in the history of saree-making.

This extraordinarily spectacular saree, is indeed hand-woven with twelve precious stones and precious metals, to depict eleven of the famous Indian painter Raja Ravi Verma's popular paintings. This arty saree is called 'Lady Musicians', one of Raja Ravi Verma's very famous works, which displays women, belonging to various cultural backgrounds. Besides, the border of the sari, features ten other paintings. The best part of the saree, is that the women depicted in the saree, have been intricately hand-woven and redecorated, with jewels of gold, diamond, platinum, silver, rubies, emeralds, yellow sapphires, blue sapphires, cat's eyes, topazes, pearls and corals.

Raja Ravi Varma was an Indian painter and artist par excellence considered as one of the greatest painters in the history of Indian art. Raja Ravi Varma is acknowledged for his paintings, which is mainly around the Puranas and the great Indian epics — Mahabharata and Ramayana. Ravi Varma is one of the few painters who managed to achieve a union of Indian tradition with the techniques of modern European art.

This saree was previously in the Limca Book of Records. It is the first silk saree, which required the use of 7,440 jacquard hooks, and 66,794 cards, during its weaving process. Moreover, a group of talented workers took 4,680 human hours, to complete this tedious task. The best part about this saree is that it is wearable just like any other regular saree.

According to sources from Chennai Silks, this 40-lakh worth bridal sari was designed on a request from a Kuwait-based businessman, who didn’t want his name to be revealed. A similar saree was sold to a Bangalore based businessman. It is said that Ms. Nita Ambani also wore a 40-lakh saree made by Chennai Silk, which had Lord Nathwada depicted on the back of the blouse. It is sad fact that these rich people have loads of money to spend on these things when the common man is struggling even for basic needs.
