Celebrating Hindi Diwas on September 14

September 14 is recognized as Hindi diwas day and is celebrated to commemorate the adoption of Hindi in Devanagari script as one of the official language of India. Hindi is one of the most widely spoken languages in India and the first language of more than 520 million people.

It was on September 14, 1949 that Hindi was declared as the official language in the Constituent Assembly by one vote. After this decision, from 1953 on September 14, India was celebrated as Hindi Day every year at the request of Rashtrabhasha Prachar Samiti, Wardha, to spread Hindi in every region. Hindi is widely spoken in the northern states of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, etc.

Many programmes are organized on Hindi Day for the promotion of Hindi. On this day, many cultural programmes are also organized in schools and colleges. Interestingly even English language has borrowed many words from Hindi, some of which being avatar, bungalow, jungle, khaki, karma, loot, mantra, nirvana, shampoo, thugs, yoga, guru, etc.
