Who would have thought when we were celebrating on December 31,2019 for ushering in a new year, little did we imagine, on the dawn of the year 2020 or ‘rocking 2020’ that it would be a disastrous year?  Even after one and half years we are still in the same position. After the first phase killed millions, now second phase is on the same path. Little did we imagine, a virus would the hold the word in its grasp.

Is it a curse that from 1720, the world has been witnessing such killer pandemics every hundred years? The Great Plague (1720-1723), killed 100 thousand people worldwide. The Cholera Pandemic (1820-1824) killed millions in Asia. In 1920 after the First World War, the Spanish Flu killed nearly 17 million people. Come circa 2020, Corona Virus has killed millions of people and the list goes on and on… In the month of March in 2020, Corona a Chinese virus wound her tentacles around the whole world.

Nostradamus the great French physician and astrologist, became quite famous in recent times with his prediction of Corona. He stated “There will be a twin year (2020) from which will arise a queen (corona) who will come from the east (China) and who will spread a plague (virus) in the darkness of night, on a country with 7 hills (Italy) and will transform the twilight of men into dust (death), to destroy and ruin the world. It will be the end of the world economy as you know it.”

This prediction was proved right. Nostradamus has predicted 2021 also as a year of suffering with draughts and floods. One can hope it does not come true like his prediction of the end of the world in 2012. But, the first five months of this year is equally grim and seem to make his predictions true again. The cases are increasing day by day. We need to thank the Lord, the cases in India are declining steadily with every passing day.

I am now going to talk about Sonu Sood an actor par excellence. “Not all super heroes wear capes, one is Sonu Sood”, tweeted a fan of the actor. Though he did mostly anti-hero roles in reel life, in real life he was a super-hero, messiah or savior for the millions of needy people. Sonu Sood (30 July 1973) is an Indian actor, producer, model and philanthropist who works predominantly in Hindi and South Indian films. Sonu Sood was born and educated in Moga, Punjab. As he once said “with eyes full of dreams and heart full of desires”, he came to Mumbai.

Ever since the outbreak of the coronavirus, actor Sonu Sood a person, with a golden heart lent a helping hand to millions including migrant workers, students, and farmers through his acts of kindness. Anyone who requested or messaged him for help, he did not disappoint them. He provided meals to the underprivileged, offered transport facilities for stranded laborers and send them back to their hometowns, and procuring PPE kits to frontline healthcare personnel.

Being a migrant himself, he understood the suffering of the stranded and jobless workers, when there was national lockdown in May 2020. He helped thousands of stranded migrant workers to reach their homes by arranging buses, special trains and chartered flights for them. In July 2020, he arranged a chartered flight to bring home over one thousand five hundred students stranded in Kyrgyzstan, and helped them to reach India. His charity during the pandemic was lauded, and he was hailed as a real-life hero in India.

In July 2020, a video of a farmer's daughters ploughing a field, like bulls with a yoke on their shoulders, went viral over social media. He was moved by the video and quickly sent the family a tractor. In the month of August 2020, he helped one hundred medical students, predominantly from Tamil Nadu, who were stranded in Moscow during the lockdown, to reach Chennai safely on a chartered flight arranged by him after they contacted his team for help. On his birthday he decided to launch a website and app called “Pravasi Rojgar” to help migrant workers find suitable jobs amid the pandemic.  The platform was built to connect “job seekers with job providers”. The initiative also aimed to train the workers with requisite skills  to increase their chances of  getting a good job. The actor has tied up with Learnet Skills, a joint venture between Schoolnet India and National Skill Development Corporation, to fulfil this imitative. He published an autobiography, “I am no messiah” where he narrated his journey to become an actor, and his social work during the pandemic.

Frontline workers like police personnel, doctors and nurses who have been working relentlessly for the welfare of the community during the difficult times of COVID-19, Sonu Sood was at the forefront by helping them in his own way and in doing whatever he could. The actor helped with thousands of PPE kits to paramedics from Punjab, and Maharashtra.

The second wave that started in the country around mid-march was more deadly. In April, daily case load was around four lakh and oxygen cylinders was the need of the hour. Sonu Sood again stepped in to help the people. His team acted immediately to help after they received an SOS call from Bengaluru to arrange for oxygen cylinders for patients at city hospital. They worked the entire night to provide oxygen to ARAK Hospital in Bengaluru from where they had received an SOS call.

In September 2020, he was honored by ‛SDG Special Humanitarian Action Award’ by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) for his humanitarian works during the Pandemic. What an honor for the country and him!

In the month of April, Sonu Sood was tested positive for Corona. He shared a message for his millions fans around the globe that said  "Covid – positive. Mood and spirit – super positive. Hi everyone, this is to inform you that I have tested positive this morning for COVID-19. As a part of precautions, I have already quarantined myself and taking utmost care. But don't worry this gives me ample time to solve your problems. Remember I am always there for you all." What a great message from this true messiah

Along with getting vaccinated against the infection, the actor had also launched “Sanjeevani – A Shot of Life”, which was an initiative to encourage people to get vaccinated against Coronavirus and for raising awareness about the inoculation drive in the country.

When asked about his work to help the needy, Sonu, who is humbleness personified said “getting hospital beds, oxygen for people is ‘more satisfying than being part of any ₹100 crore film”. If only, more celebrities come forward to help the needy in tough times such as these, the world would have been a better place. I am a big fan of his humanitarian efforts. One of his fans tweeted “ Sonu Sood Sir is the vaccine for Migrant workers. He is not less than God for the workers and people who want to go home and meet their family. Love you Sir, you’re doing a remarkable job. Real hero”
