Chennai: Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep rocked Bangladesh with the new ball, leaving them at 26/3 after seven overs and trailing India by 350 runs at lunch on day two of the first Test in Chennai. Earlier, veteran off-spin all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin top-scored with 113 as India’s first innings finished on 376 in 91.2 overs.

India scored in the first over when Bumrah adjusted his angle to come around the wicket, got one to nip back in, and hit the top of the off-stump over Shadman Islam’s shoulder. The Bangladeshi hitters faced baptism by fire as Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj bowled attacking lengths.

In the final over preceding lunch, Akash knocked down Zakir Hasan’s middle stump with a nip-backer from outside the crease. The very next ball, he beat Mominul Haque with a nip-backer that went past the batter’s forward defence to strike the off-stump, as seven wickets fell in the opening session.

India, Bangladesh Test: Yashasvi Was Thinking of Plan to Execute His Batting

Bangladesh will rely on captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim to reclaim their innings after lunch. Previously, with some moisture on the ground, Taskin Ahmed took 3-55 with the new ball, while Hasan Mahmud secured back-to-back five-wicket hauls in Test cricket to terminate India’s innings just an hour into Day 2.

Bangladesh began day two by taking the second new ball and continuing to bowl at a decent length. Ashwin, who resumed from 102 not out, helped India’s innings resume from 339/6 with a thick edge over the slip cordon for four. Taskin struck in his second over of the day, curving the ball towards Ravindra Jadeja and getting a tiny edge on a tentative stroke straight to the keeper.

Jadeja’s dismissal ended his 199-run partnership with Ashwin, leaving the left-handed batter 14 runs short of a century. Akash threw kitchen sink at the balls towards him, hitting four boundaries and getting dropped by Shakib Al Hasan on eight, before his slog off. Taskin took a top edge and was caught at mid-off for 17 off 30 balls.

Taskin claimed his third wicket of the day when Ashwin mistimed his drive and surrendered a catch to mid-off, falling for 113 from 133 balls and receiving a standing ovation from the tiny Chepauk crowd.

Mahmud terminated India’s first innings in just over an hour on day two, with Bumrah edging to the third slip to collect up five wickets in two Test matches. The pacer also became the first Bangladeshi bowler to collect five wickets in Tests in India.

Brief Scores

India 376 in 91.2 overs (Ravichandran Ashwin 113, Ravindra Jadeja 86; Hasan Mahmud 5-83, Taskin Ahmed 3-55) lead Bangladesh 26/3 in nine overs (Najmul Hossain Shanto 15 not out; Akash Deep 2-5, Jasprit Bumrah 1-10) by 350 runs.
