Swami Madhava Chaitanya,

PK childhood was full of difficulties, untouchability was one of the serious troubles he faced in his childhood. He was forced to sit outside the classroom during the school period, would watch classmates wash if they came into contact with him, and had stones thrown at him when he approached the village temple. According to the priests, PK dirtied everything that was pure and holy.

Latter PK said: "The caste system in India is organized racism. At home, as a child, I didn’t feel it, but when I came to school I came into contact with my classmates. They all belonged to the Hindu religion which I belong to. There I felt I’m not the same as them. It’s like a skyscraper without a lift. You’re born on one floor and you die on the same floor. Bullying was accepted by the society under the Maharajas. But when I was born in independent India, I was supposed to be protected by the constitution law. But it didn’t work. British ruled India. My grandmother was allowed to sit inside the classroom whereas I had to sit outside in Independent India. I thought, “My God, it was better under the British!” Today, people are going back to the caste attitude, the old racism". And he said: "I don’t blame Indians. They are warm-hearted people. It’s the system that makes them behave like this".

One day PK was allowed to sit at the back of the classroom, but he has put a condition not to touch anyone, as they'd be "polluted." A British school inspector and his wife were coming to visit the school. After a royal welcome inspector gave his garland of flowers to a girl at the front. His wife walked all the way to the back and gave hers to PK."She touched his head and said: 'Your lovely curly hair!'" PK said later "I was happy, but at the same time I was crying. It was like a little light for me in the dark cave."

PK took the garland proudly home to his mother and said: "Mum, I'm in love with the school inspector's wife." His mother made him calm and also told him that his wife would be from a faraway land and born under the zodiac sign of Taurus, that she would be the owner of a jungle or forest, and that she would be a musician, playing the flute.

In India, it is common for the parents to call an astrologer when a newborn child comes to the planet. PK parents gave an assurance to him they would not force him in his marriage, they gave him full freedom to choose his partner. That was not very common in India at that time. Child marriage was a custom in most of the Indian villages. But PK parents were poor in the eyes of the upper-class society, but they were big in their hearts. After that incident, PK started to believe strongly in the prophecy, and later he got to know that everything is planned on this planet. His life experience proved that.

PK attended Mahendra High School, Athmallik Village, and later joined Visva-Bharati University to study art. Despite his admittance to the art school, it became impossible for him to pay for tuition, so he had to return home. He later joined the Government College of Art and Crafts, Khallikote to study art. To satisfy his quest for the arts he joined the College of Art, Delhi to study Fine Arts in 1971.

Dr. PK was a born gifted artist. Later he shared: "I was told when I was born that I would be working with colors and art. I was quick in drawing things. I eventually got a scholarship from the Odisha Government to start to attend the College of Art which was started by the British in 1942.

PK started studying fine arts on a scholarship. It was difficult because most of the time the scholarship amount didn't reach him and finding a job was difficult due to discrimination he'd face as a Dalit. To get an extra amount for living Dr. PK became a street artist. PK found a place to sit in the street of Connaught place, New Delhi. It was a hot tourist spot in the capital city of India. He had made a name for himself as a sketch artist and enjoyed a good reputation in the local area. But things were not so easy for PK. He was not supposed to draw pictures in the street, so police used to take him down to the station. It was actually quite nice for him. PK used to sleep there and they used to give him food. He said later he was like a vagabond living between hope and despair. But during three years PK learned the lessons of life and started to think in a different way. PK started to take life in a positive way. And very soon PK got another turning point in life.

But that all changed when PK was at a procession one day. It was for Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman cosmonaut from the USSR. Valentina Tereshkova was invited to India by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. PK saw her one day in the road, she was in her security coverage, a huge crowd gathered to see her, but somehow, PK managed to sneak through the crowd and came face to face with her. He asked her permission to make a sketch of her. Valentina Tereshkova gave permission with a smile, PK quickly made a sketch of her and presented it to her. She liked that sketch very much and she smiled at PK, He was invited to the Parliamentary Club by Valentina Tereshkova and the Indo-Soviet Society. PK ended up doing 10 portraits of Valentina and appeared on TV. Overnight PK became famous in Delhi. The next day all newspapers went ablaze with headlines like "Woman from Space meets a Jungle man.” PK added: "This game gave me the opportunity to make a portrait of Indira Gandhi. After that authorities changed the attitude and gave permission to PK to sit under the fountain of Connaught Place. He was given the opportunity to draw tourists visiting the place. After that PK was established as a sketch artist and started to earn a livelihood from that.

What had happened so far was just the beginning of that big event that would change the whole life of PK. Once again another turning point came to PK's life. On 17th December 1975, he met a girl from Sweden called Charlotte von
