Wrestler Sushil Kumar powered India to its 14th gold medal at the 21st Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Gold Coast, Australia. He competed against South African opponent Johannes Botha in the men's freestyle 74kg final at the Carrara Sports Arena.
This is the third straight CWG gold for two-time Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar.
Kumar is the only Indian sportsperson to have won two Olympic medals and has also won many medals for India previously in the Commonwealth Championships as well as in the World Championships.
He became the first Indian wrestler to win an Olympic medal when he won bronze in Beijing 2008 only after K D Yadav did it for the country in 1952. He turned his bronze into silver at the 2012 London Olympics.
Later on doubts loomed on his ability to replicate his previous achievements as he was caught with injury many times and eventually resulted his absence in the 2016 Rio Olympics. He proved all his critics wrong by rising to the occasion once again, that too at the biggest stage.
