In the EURO Championship, all the top teams of Europe contest in this glorious tournament which was inaugurated in 1960. We will look at the 5 top highest-scoring matches in the history of this glorious competition after Spain vs Croatia in Euro 2020.

1960 semi-finals: France 4-5 Yugoslavia

In the inaugural campaign of the EURO 1960, France and Yugoslavia came head-to-head in the semi-final of the tournament. France was strong favorites heading into the semi-final as Yugoslavia were the underdogs. France started dominating the game and went 2-1 up just before halftime. Yugoslavia were not finished as they came back stronger in the second half and scored an equalizer. French doubled their lead twice with a quarter of the game to play. Yugoslavia scored thrice in the quick succession of 5 minutes to eliminate France from the inaugural 1960 EURO Championship. It is still the highest-scoring match of the European Championship. Yugoslavia reached the final but lost to Russia by 2-1 after extra time.

2020 round of 16: Croatia 3-5 Spain

In the crucial last-16 fixture of the EURO 2020 between Croatia and Spain, we witnessed one of the highest-scoring match in this year’s competition. Croatia led by an early own goal from Pedri who passed the ball to Unai Simon who misjudged the ball resulting in an own goal by young Barcelona Midfielder. Spain equalized after 18 minutes by a goal from Sarabia just before halftime getting Spain back into the game. Spain scored twice after halftime but were not able to stop Croatia who were relentless in attack. An 85-minute goal from M. Oršić restored some hope for the Croatian fans.

In the dying stages of the match, M. Pašalić scored a dramatic 90+2 minute equalizer to take the game into extra time. Spain dominated the extra time and scored twice and this time not letting their precious lead slip from their hands. Spain advance to the quarter-finals of the EURO 2020.

2016 quarter-finals: France 5-2 Iceland

Who can forget Iceland’s historic run to the quarter-finals in the EURO 2016 when they defeated England in the round-of-16 match? They were clearly the underdogs but threatened any opposition that came in their way. One in 12 of Iceland’s population had travelled to France to support them! As expected, the French side dominated the game in the first half scoring four goals just before halftime. They did not allow any room for a comeback to Iceland. In the second half, Iceland scored twice winning the second half of the match against strong title contenders France.

2020 group stage: Portugal 2-4 Germany

On the second matchday in the Group of death of the EURO 2020, Portugal faced Germany in an intense battle to regain some dominance in the group. Match began with high intensity as Germany scored within 5 minutes only to be ruled out by a handball in the buildup. Ronaldo opened the scoring for Portugal with an easy tap-in to stir Portugal in the driving seat of the tie. But Germany were not backing down, they ran a rampage on the Portuguese defense who did not have answers to the fast-flowing German football.

Germany scored two goals before halftime courtesy of an own goal from Ruben Dias and Raphaël Guerreiro. Germany doubled their lead in the second half giving no chance to Portugual to reduce the deficit to make this one of the highest scoring games in Euro.

2020 round of 16: France 3-3 Switzerland (aet, pens: 4-5)

World Champion France were eliminated from the round-of-16 of the EURO 2020 by Switzerland who did it the hard way. They led by Haris Seferović’s powerful header which flew into the French Goal leaving Lloris Helpless. In the second half of the game, Rodriguez was presented with the chance to double the lead for Switzerland but Lloris saved his effort from the penalty spot. Later in the game, Karim Benzema fulfilled his destiny and scored twice to give France the lead. Paul Pogba started growing into the game and was absolutely phenomenal. He converted a thunderous attempt at goal and increased the margin of the lead. In the dying stages of the match, Switzerland equalized by goals from Seferović and Mario Gavranović which shifted the whole momentum.

Match went into extra time in which both the teams were tired and failed to score which resulted in the match going to penalties. Goalkeeper Yann Sommer had the final say, saving the tenth spot-kick of the shoot-out from Kylian Mbappé to give Switzerland their first-ever victory in the knockout stages.
