Punjab Chief Minister, Captain Amrinder Singh today told that Punjab cannot share water with other states. Speaking in reply to the motion of thanks on Punjab Governor’s address, Captain Singh said that there is a scarcity of water in Punjab and in line with internationally accepted riparian principles Punjab will not transfer water from basin to non-basin areas.
According top priority to safeguard Punjab’s water rights the chief minister said that the state government will continue to protect the water rights of the state to ensure the smooth livelihood of its farmers and labourers. Commenting upon the measures taken by his government, Captain Amrinder Singh said that apart from enactment of the Punjab Water Resources (Management and Regulation) Act of 2020, the government had also piloted a unique project namely ‘Pani Bachao, Paisa Kamao’ (Save Water, Earn Money) aimed at incentivizing farmers to save water and earn money by consuming lesser ground water.’
He further told that his government aims to complete the Shahpur Kandi Dam Project in 2022-23 and Kandi Canal, along with attendant water courses, by providing requisite finances during 2020-21. These measures will help Punjab make itself self-sufficient in the years to come.
