In April 2018 Fiscal Monitor Report, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) praised India for its push towards digitalisation, saying that "the experiences of India and South Africa show how digitalisation can help improve social protection and the delivery of public services."
The country has been gradually taking strides to embrace digital tools and platforms in all spheres of life. One of the biggest bets from the government in this direction has been the introduction and implementation of Aadhaar-a move supported by the IMF as well. In the past few years, the country has seen digitalisation make a mark in multiple spheres including education, social welfare connectivity. In the past few years, India has become one of largest consumers of data in the world.
The story of India's digitalisation can't be complete without mentioning the penetration of digital payments in the country using a variety of platforms including UPI (Unified Payment Interface), Paytm and Google Pay. The increasing number of smartphones in the country has led to an unprecedented growth in digital transactions in the country. The impact of this change is being seen mainly in online shopping, payment of utility bills and movie tickets. Pandemic has also been a catalyst to this revolution in the country.
