Kolkata: The brutality meted out to a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College had shocked the entire country. People are continuously demanding justice for the victim. A Durga Puja pandal, ‘Lajja’, based on the theme of this shameful incident, has been erected in Kolkata.

Usually, Maa Durga holds a weapon in each of her ten hands. But, in the statue installed in this pandal, all the deity’s hands are spread and empty. The goddess has covered her face with her two hands.

The statue of a woman, representing a victim of the RG Kar incident, is placed on the ground directly in front of the goddess, with a sheet draped over her. The lion of Maa Durga is looking at this woman with his head bowed. Right next to the goddess hangs the apron that doctors wear. This idol will not be worshipped.

Any other traditional idol has also been kept in the pandal for worship.

Abhijit Sarkar was the first person to lose his life in post-poll violence in 2021. This pandal has been set up before Abhijeet’s house in Beleghata in Kolkata.

Abhijeet Sarkar’s brother Biswajit Sarkar said that this pandal has been established in the memory of the people who were victims of the negligence of the Mamata Banerjee government. Biswajit too has expressed apprehension that Mamata Banerjee’s party may get him murdered.

Today is the first day of Navratri – Nine-Nights Festival dedicated to Goddess Durga. Durga Puja is celebrated in West Bengal from the sixth day of Navratri.
