Popular Folk Singer Sharda Sinha, Known for her Chhath Puja Songs, Dies at 72 on First Day of The Festival

New Delhi: Famous folk singer Sharda Sinha breathed her last on Tuesday night at AIIMS, New Delhi, due to complications arising out of cancer. She was 72.

A few days ago, she was admitted to AIIMS in Delhi due to illness. On Monday, she was put on a ventilator when her health deteriorated.

Sharda Sinha’s son, Anshuman Sinha, shared this information in a post on Facebook.

He said, “All of you will always pray and love for mother. Chhathi Maiya has called mother to her. Mother is now in physical form. She is no longer amongst us.”

Sharda Sinha, a recipient of the prestigious Padma Bhushan, was celebrated for her Maithili and Bhojpuri songs. Her repertoire includes the popular ‘Vivaah Geet’ and ‘Chhath Geet’. Her significant contributions to music were also recognised with the Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan awards.

Ironically, the singer known for her renditions of Chhath songs passed away on Tuesday, the festival’s first day. Chhath Puja is a significant Hindu festival dedicated to the Sun God and is widely celebrated in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh. Sharda Sinha’s Chhath songs have been an integral part of this festival for many years, and her sudden demise on the festival’s first day has deeply saddened her fans.

Sharda Sinha was born on October 1, 1952, in Bihar’s Samastipur into a family with a deep-rooted connection to music. Her journey began with All India Radio and Doordarshan in 1980, where she quickly gained fame for her powerful voice and emotional performances.

She also lent her voice to the superhit Salman Khan-Bhagyashree starrer Maine Pyar Kiya, in which she sang the song ‘Kahe Toh Se Sajna’ and another Salman starrer ‘Babul Jo Tum Ne Sikhaya’ in Hum Aapke Hain Koun. As the sad news about the death of the folk singer surfaced, condolence messages started pouring in on social media.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief at the legendary singer’s death and said her demise is an irreparable loss to the music world. In a post on X, he noted that her folk songs in Maithili and Bhojpuri were extremely popular.

Taking to X, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, “I am deeply saddened by the demise of Shrimati Sharda Sinha ji. She was a multi-talented folk singer who made Bhojpuri language popular among the masses. People will remember her songs for a long time. With her demise, the world of folk music has lost an influential voice. In this hour of grief, I express my condolences to her bereaved family and fans. Om Shanti!”

“The demise of renowned folk singer Padma Bhushan Dr. Sharda Sinha ji is extremely sad and an irreparable loss for the entire music world,” he added.

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Aditynath said, “Humble tribute to her! Through her excellent traditional singing, she served many folk languages including Maithili, Bhojpuri and folk culture and brought her respect on the national stage.”

“I pray to Lord Shri Ram to give a place to the departed soul in his feet and provide strength to her bereaved family and fans to bear this immense loss. Om peace!” he added.

Singer Malini Awasthi shared Sharda Sinha’s picture and wrote in Hindi with a sad heart, ‘Didi, how can I say goodbye to you.’

Bhojpuri superstar and BJP leader Nirahua Hindustani alias Dinesh Lal Yadav shared Sharda Sinha’s picture and wrote, ‘The untimely demise of popular singer, Bihar Kokila, voice empress, Padma Bhushan awardee respected Sharda Sinha ji is very sad. Chhath of UP Bihar was incomplete without her music. May God grant her soul peace and a high place at His feet!
