India issued a stern warning to Facebook, in a first of its kind, as the Union Minister for Information & Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the government  won't tolerate any attempt to influence the electoral process in the country.

The minister also reminded the social media giant of severe consequences if it breaches the personal data security.

The government was forced to issue a strong statement regarding personal data sharing largely because of the controversial relation aired between US President Donald Trump and Cambridge Analytica, a company that worked for Trump during the US presidential election and intruded into more than five crore Facebook accounts to make sure that the election results were in Trump's favour.

The Government of India made it clear that they won't allow any attempts to tarnish the democratic system in the country by any media while respecting the freedom of press as well as the freedom of expression.
