Kolkata: Registering her protest in the rape and murder of a junior woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital earlier last month, noted singer Shreya Ghoshal said on Saturday that she will postpone her scheduled live concert in Kolkata to be held in September.

She announced on her official Facebook page that the show, slated for the city on September 14, has been rescheduled for October. The date of the concert has not been declared.

In her post, Shreya stated unequivocally that she and the concert organisers had decided with an “aching heart and deep sorrow” to stand in solidarity with the demonstrators and raise their voices against the RG Kar incident.

“I am deeply affected by the gruesome and heinous incident that recently took place in Kolkata. Being a woman myself, the very thought of the sheer brutality that she must have gone through is unthinkable and sends shivers down my spine,” Ghoshal said in her statement.

According to her, while everyone was looking forward to the upcoming event, it was vitally necessary for her to take a stand and join the protestors in solidarity on this issue.

“I sincerely pray for the respect and safety of women in this world, not just our country. I am hopeful my friends and fans will accept and understand our decision to push this concert,” her statement read.

The development adds a new dimension to the nationwide protest on the rape and murder tragedy.

Notably, a number of community Durga Puja organisers in West Bengal have announced their decision to reject the state government’s annual donation for the forthcoming festival, a move that underscores the unity and shared purpose among various groups and individuals in the state.

A theatre group based in the Malda district of West Bengal has also returned the state government’s donation cheque for organising a theatre fair in the district.

Junior doctors in different state-run hospitals in the state have continued with their protests and cease work, demonstrating their unwavering determination in the face of the ghastly tragedy.
