Media Eye News Bureau: The DC Comics-inspired series on CW, Black Lightning had a strong debut with two cameo appearances by real-life activists carefully in the premiere episode.

Nina Turner, Ohio State senator and founder of Our Revolution and journalist and commentator Roland Martin both appeared as themselves. In the episode, titled, ‘The Resurrection,’ Turner appeared during the episode's first act, introducing the principal Jefferson Pierce at a fundraiser for his school, Garfield High.

Later, Martin appeared on a news program running in the background of a few scenes, talking about the importance of Black Lightning and the inequality he faces even as a superhero by stating that other cities have heroes, but Freeland's African American Black Lightning is the one who is treated like a criminal.
