Kolkata: A post by Amit Malviya, the BJP’s information technology chief and special observer for West Bengal, related to Kolkata Police Inspector Abhijit Mondal’s arrest has aroused conjecture in political circles regarding the destiny of the controversial city police commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal.

CBI arrested Mondol in connection with the ghastly rape and murder of a junior doctor of R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital on Saturday.

“The Commissioner of Kolkata Police, too, played an active role in revealing the identity of the deceased and covering up the crime. ” Malviya said in a social media message posted late Saturday night that he and Mamata Banerjee could be next in line.

Mondal was in charge of the Tala Police Station, under the jurisdiction of R.G. Kar Hospital, when the body of the junior doctor was recovered from the seminar hall within the hospital premises on the morning of August 9. However, recently, he was removed from that position by the city police authorities.

In his post, Malviya also claimed that Mondal was the person the Chief Minister had earlier defended. He also said that some hospitals had denied admission to Mondol when he complained of serious illness and wanted to be treated there. Reportedly, it was a Kolkata Police’s ploy to admit Mondal (in hospital) to evade arrest. A hospital had denied admission until the Chief Minister called and “threatened” the promoter of one such hospital in the matter.

The major charges against Mondal included deceiving the original inquiry and tampering with evidence in the rape and murder case while Kolkata Police were investigating before the charge was transferred to the CBI by a division bench of the Calcutta High Court.

On Saturday, Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar, who was previously detained by the CBI for financial irregularities at the institution and is now in judicial custody, was also listed as “arrested” in the rape and murder case.
