Chennai: A consumer dispute forum directed the famous South Indian restaurant chain Saravana Bhavan to pay Rs. 1.10 lakh to an advocate of the Supreme Court as compensation for the supposed defect in serving food. The latest order given here by the Tamil Nadu State Consumer Disputes Reddressal Commission directed the hotel to pay Rs. one lakh as a "reward for mental anguish" endured by the plaintiff SK Saamy, in addition to Rs. 10,000 as litigation costs.

In his complaint, SK Saamy prayed for a total compensation of Rs. 90 lakh "for ill-health, severe mental agony and other hardships" faced from "food poisoning" in October 2014, after he consumed food at the restaurant's Anna Salai outlet in the city.
