Bhopal: The Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, expressed astonishment on Thursday at the attack on Army officers and the alleged rape of a woman accompanying them in Madhya Pradesh.

He termed the incident “shameful”.

“The violence against two Army soldiers and the rape of their female companion in Madhya Pradesh is enough to shame the entire society,” he wrote on social media platform X.

Rahul Gandhi again slammed the BJP government, claiming that the peace and order situation in nearly every BJP-ruled state has deteriorated.

He expressed concern about what he thought was the BJP’s unfavourable stance to women’s safety.

“The audacity of criminals is the result of failure of the administration, and the unsafe environment prevailing in the country is becoming a barrier for the women,” the Congress leader added.

He also said, “Both society and the government should be ashamed and think seriously—how long will they turn a blind eye to the responsibility of protecting half the country’s population?”

The incident involving the two officers and friends

On Wednesday, two Army personnel and their female companions went on a picnic near the Jam Gate in Indore’s Mhow.

The location is around 50 km from Indore district headquarters and 25 km from Mhow.

According to the complaint, the accused held four people at gunpoint, kidnapped an officer and a woman, and demanded that the other officer pay a ransom of Rs 10 lakh.

This allowed the officer and one of the women to flee and tell their senior Army officials in Mhow.

However, by the time police arrived, the accused had fled the scene.

Up to ten police teams have been conducting intensive searches in the surrounding vicinity of Jam Gate, where the event occurred.

Rupesh Dwivedi, Additional Superintendent of Police, told the reporters that police had apprehended two suspects in the case and were questioning them.
