Kanpur: First, the weather played truant, and now there is a different nuisance. The second cricket test match between India and Bangladesh at Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium faced a unique challenge: the monkey menace. In a novel move, the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) has brought in langurs (long-tailed leaf monkeys) to tackle this issue.

The decision to enlist langurs was made with the primary goal of protecting the safety and comfort of fans, staff, and broadcast personnel from potential monkey disruptions, which have been known to invade the stadium in search of food.

Venue director Sanjay Kapoor said before the start of the match’s media briefing, “To avoid the terror of monkeys, we have langurs to take care of them.”

Using langurs is a proven and effective practice in the city to deal with the monkey menace. Their presence has consistently deterred monkey disruptions during international matches at the venue in the past, providing a sense of reassurance to all involved.

The UPCA has taken proactive measures to ensure the safety and security of everyone involved. These measures include covering the raised stands where television crews set up their cameras with black cloth on either side and at the back to prevent the monkeys from entering.
