Accused in Bengal Woman Doctor Murder arrested and escorted by police men

Kolkata: Following the arrest of a man in connection with the rape and killing of a female doctor at this state-run R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, concerns have been raised about how the accused, as a volunteer citizen, was granted the same rights and freedoms as regular police officers.

According to sources, the first irregularity is that accused Sanjay Ray used to live in a police barrack in Ultadanga in North Kolkata, which is intended for regular officers on the permanent payroll, as the preliminary investigation has shown.

There are now questions about how top state police officers could have overlooked this blatant anomaly and why any regular barrack resident could not bring the issue to the attention of higher authorities.

Second, the investigating authorities have traced the personal numbers of a few lower-ranking police officers and staff members from his cell phone.

According to the sources, the investigating authorities don’t think the suspected volunteer for the community was in frequent contact with the people whose phone numbers were found on his cell phone.

A list of regular city police employees that the accused civic volunteer was allegedly close to has been created by the investigation’s administrators, and if needed, these employees will also be questioned.

The investigating authorities have also learned that Ray frequently identified himself as an assistant sub-inspector of police attached to the state police’s armed police division, even though he was only a contractual employee and a civic volunteer.

Aside from that, insiders with knowledge of local police operations claimed there had been earlier reports of the accused being drunk on the job, which had led to his repeated misbehavior with other volunteer citizens.

According to the preliminary assessment, the accused was quite drunk even on the Friday night when the woman doctor—a postgraduate student at the R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital and member of the house staff—was attacked in the seminar hall.
