Patna: On Saturday,  Lalu Prasad Yadav, the former chief minister of Bihar and president of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), denounced the horrific incident of a woman doctor being raped and killed at the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata and called for “the harshest possible punishment” for those responsible.

He stressed the need for justice for the victim and her family and called the incident abhorrent.

In addition to acknowledging the doctors’ objections, the former Union Minister supported their call for justice.

“A heinous crime has been committed. Such incidents are a matter of grave concern for us. The victim should be given justice. The doctors are protesting… they should be given justice,” he stated.

Doctors nationwide have begun a national protest campaign in response to the horrible incident that occurred in Kolkata. They are calling for enhanced protection for medical personnel at all medical colleges, hospitals, and clinics and justice for the victim.

Doctors at major hospitals, including Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH), Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna AIIMS, and others have suspended emergency and outpatient department (OPD) services due to the protest wave.

The suspension of these critical services reflects the doctors’ frustration and concern over their safety and the need for swift justice. The protests also underscore the urgent demand for better security measures to protect healthcare workers from violence and ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future.

Meanwhile, Lalu Prasad Yadav travelled to Delhi on Saturday, and sources hinted that he would shortly be travelling to Singapore for a standard medical examination.

On December 5, 2022, the former Bihar CM received a kidney transplant in Singapore.

Rohini Acharya, his daughter, gave him her kidney during the transplant process.
