Dhaka: As per the local media accounts, scores of at least 49 teachers from Bangladesh’s minority ethnicities were compelled to quit in the weeks following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation as prime minister.

According to The Daily Star, the Bangladesh Chhatra Oikya Parishad, the student wing of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad, announced this during a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club on Saturday.

Sajib Sarkar, the organisation’s coordinator, stated that after the fall of the Hasina-led administration, religious and ethnic minorities have faced a wave of violence.

He stated that this has included attacks, looting, assaults on women, temple destruction, arson attacks on homes and businesses, and even killings.

Sarkar also disclosed that minority teachers around the country have been physically assaulted, resulting in the forced departure of at least 49 teachers by August 30. However, 19 of those teachers have been reinstated, he said.

Sheikh Hasina’s government was forced to resign last month following violent student-led anti-quota protests that killed over 400 people.

Last month, while Muhammad Yunus, the interim government’s Chief Advisor, stated after taking the oath that he would “uphold, support, and protect the constitution and will perform duties sincerely,” there was a massive outbreak of violence in the country after Hasina left Dhaka with goons, causing huge unrest and targeting Hindus, their homes, and places of worship.

The Bangladesh Jatiya Hindu Mohajot (BJHM), a grand national alliance of 23 religious organisations in the country, stated that Hindu families have faced violence and vandalism in as many as 278 locations across 48 districts of the country since August 5.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi again stressed India’s commitment to Bangladesh’s stability and prosperity. He concluded: “In the coming days, we will always wish well for Bangladesh’s ‘Vikas Yatra’ (journey of development) because we are the well-wishers of humankind.”
