Kolkata: In a surprise move, hours after resigning as the principal of state-run R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata on Monday, Sandip Ghosh was appointed as the principal of the National Medical College & Hospital (NMCH) through a notification issued by the West Bengal Health Department.

Three days after the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, which set off significant protests throughout the state, Ghosh announced his resignation on Monday morning, citing “moral responsibility.”

Many individuals were caught off guard by the most recent development, which emerged on Monday morning when Ghosh announced his resignation from both the state medical services and as principal of R.G. Kar MCH.

He stated that the public at large, as well as the medical students and junior doctors at R.G., Kar, supported his decision to step down in response to the rape and killing of the college’s second-year post-graduation student last week.

According to sources within the Health Department, he was accepted to stand down from the state medical services but not from his position as principal of R.G. Kar. He has been named the NMCH’s principal as a result, effective immediately.

Ajay Ray, the NMCH’s current principal, has been moved to the state Health Department as an officer on special duty (OSD). Surhrita Pal, the OSD of the Health Department, has been appointed as the new principal of R.G. Kar MCH.

Announcing his resignation on Monday morning, Ghosh said, “For the last few days, my family and I have been subjected to various adverse comments. So I have decided to resign.”

Ghosh also claimed that he was made a victim of ‘political conspiracy’ by his rival group.

“I have never been part of any kind of political game,” he said.

A few hours after entering the building’s seminar hall, the postgraduate trainee at the chest department of the RG Kar Medical College & Hospital was discovered dead with multiple injuries on Friday morning.
