Jaipur: Tragically, on Monday, the Class 10 kid who a classmate had stabbed at a government school in Udaipur on August 16 passed away from injuries sustained.

As the entire country celebrated Raksha Bandhan on Monday, the young boy lay in the ICU battling for life.  Just before his sad demise, around 2 pm, the student’s sister and a cousin tied rakhi on his wrist after obtaining special permission from the hospital. Unfortunately, a little while later he passed away in spite of doctors best efforts to save his life.

His family, however, refused a post-mortem, stating that strict action against the accused, appropriate compensation, and a government job for a family member were among their demands. Only after all parties reached a consensus could the autopsy be carried out.

After a disagreement last Friday, the 15-year-old student, known as Devraj Mochi, was stabbed by a classmate, causing severe injuries. After being admitted to the MB Hospital on Monday at around 3 p.m., his condition began to worsen.

A sizable police presence was positioned outside the hospital as soon as the doctors confirmed the patient’s death, according to officials.

Following the stabbing incident on Friday, a furious mob set about six cars on fire, and there were also reports of stone-pelting incidents from other parts of the city, which alarmed the officials.

There was discord in the city because, according to sources, the students were from different communities.

On Monday night, officials said that an agreement had been reached wherein the family of the dead would receive Rs 51 lakh in financial support, and one relative would receive contractual employment. Additionally, the ST-SC Act will be applied to the case.

The people who assembled in front of the hospital also called for the dismissal of the school staff.

As word of Devraj’s passing spread throughout Udaipur, many people assembled in front of the Emergency ward, chanting slogans. The infuriated crowd charged that the hospital management had been deceiving them about the injured student’s condition for the last four days.

Udaipur Rural MLA Phool Singh Meena, Divisional Commissioner Rajendra Bhatt, District Collector Arvind Poswal, IGP Ajaypal Lamba, SP Yogesh Goyal, and a large number of police personnel were present on the spot.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Jawahar Singh Bedham appealed to the people to remain calm, saying, “The incident was sad, but the government tried its best. Please maintain mutual harmony.”

To prevent any untoward incident, Section 144 has been clamped in the city, and the internet ban has been extended until Tuesday night in Udaipur City, Bedla, Bargaon, Balicha, Debari, Eklingpura, Kanpur, Dhikali, and Bhuwana to stop the spread of rumours.

“We appeal to all the residents of Udaipur to not gather anywhere in large numbers. The family (of the victim) is traumatised, so please stay indoors so that the atmosphere remains calm. Don’t pay attention to rumours,” said IGP Lamba.

All precautions are being taken for the last rites of Devraj, which will be performed on Tuesday.
