Bengaluru: A 59-year-old Iraqi man who had an 11 cm large abdominal aneurysm, or aortic enlargement, was given a fresh lease on life by the  doctors in Bengaluru.

For the past eight years, the man has battled hypertension and ischemic heart disease.

An extraordinarily enormous size aneurysm in his belly was discovered at Sakra World Hospital in Bengaluru after a thorough investigation.

The aneurysm, which was 11.5 cm long and 8.5 cm wide, affected both the kidneys’ primary blood supply and the intestines’ blood supply. It stretched from above the origin of both kidney arteries to the aortic bifurcation.

Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) can occur anywhere below the diaphragm, with the infrarenal area — just below the kidneys — being one of the most common locations.

According to hospital radiologist Dr Madhu Prashanth, this disease is called thoracic aneurysm above the diaphragm and abdominal aortic aneurysm below it.

The main risk factors for AAA, according to Dr. Prashanth, include “age, male gender, smoking, atherosclerosis, family history, hypertension, high cholesterol, and certain connective tissue conditions like Marfan syndrome.”

The individual had a “total endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair” surgery. The procedure includes making a tiny incision in the groin to insert a stent graft that is directed by the femoral artery to the location of the aneurysm.

When the stent is inserted, it expands to strengthen the weak aortic segment and reroute blood flow via it instead of the aneurysm.

The patient’s health significantly improved as a result of receiving effective treatment and crucial assistance.

The main benefit of the minimally invasive operation was that he was able to leave the hospital in a stable condition within 24 hours. Dr. Prashanth also stated that he was administered medicine and given appropriate follow-up instructions.

The patient thanked the physicians and added, “I’ve been struggling with health issues for a long time, and although it has been very painful, the continuous guidance and check-ups before and after surgery have given me strength.”
