Delhi Health Minister A.K. Walia Monday directed officials to adopt a two-pronged strategy to prevent dengue cases, the number of which has increased to 89.
In the corresponding period in 2012, only 9 cases of dengue were detected.
The two-pronged strategy to deal with dengue will include spreading awareness about mosquito breeding and stringent action those whose house or compounds were found prone to breeding.
"The minister directed the health officials of three municipalities to increase prosecution action, especially in Narela and Rohini zones where the large number of dengue cases were found and which together account for half of total cases," said an Delhi government official.
At the meeting, it came to light that mosquitoes have been breeding largely in the institutional areas, especially within the premises of centres of higher learning, technical and educational institutes, police stations, hospitals, and government offices.
The officials of National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Directorate of National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) and National Institute of Malaria Research (NIMR) were present in the meeting chaired by Walia.
