Guwahati: Assam’s chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, declared on Wednesday that the government will provide select tea estates Rs 2 crore and that the state would encourage tourism in its well-known and picturesque tea gardens.
Sarma stated that Assamese tea gardens can draw both domestic and foreign visitors because of their verdant surroundings, recognisable bungalows, amiable locals, and (their) unique music and dance.
He emphasises that the unique cultural legacy of Assamese tea gardens, which has piqued the interest of many across the country and beyond, could potentially transform these gardens into major tourist destinations.
With a firm commitment, the Assam government is developing select tea gardens as tourism destinations in a mission mode approach,” Sarma said.

The plan would encourage private tea enterprises to develop tea tourism and modernise the tea gardens’ current infrastructure for tourists, including upgrading accommodation, improving transportation, and enhancing recreational facilities.
The state government intends to encourage cooperation among stakeholders, including state tourism operators and estate owners, to ensure a thriving tea tourism business while preserving the cultural integrity of the tea gardens.
According to a senior government official, promotional events like tea leaf plucking, hiking, rafting, golfing, and nature walks have been scheduled.
According to the Chief Minister, 34 tea estates in the state have received financial offers to boost tea tourism.
Taking to X, Sarma wrote, “To celebrate 200 years of Assam tea and promote its tourism potential, we are extending financial assistance to select tea gardens, who meet certain criteria, of up to ₹2 crore to develop their infrastructure and attract tourists from the world over.
“This scheme will enhance facilities at tea gardens and propel them as centres of tourist attraction.”
