British race-car driver Sean Edwards died Tuesday in a crash at Australia's Queensland Raceway. He was 26.

The son of former Formula One driver Guy Edwards was riding in the passenger seat of a Porsche 996 while giving instructions to a 20-year-old Australian man during a private training session.

The car crashed head-on into the tire wall and burst into flames, autosport.com said. While Edwards was killed, the Australian who was at the wheel was critically injured.

Sean Edwards led the drivers' championship in the 2013 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season ahead of this year's final event, a Nov 2-3 double-header at Yas Marina.

Highlights of his 2013 season included wins in the Nurburgring and Dubai 24 Hours, the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany and the GTC class of the American Le Mans Series.
