Southampton: Australia opener Travis Head hit 30 runs off Sam Curran’s over during his gripping 23-ball 59, leading his team to a 28-run triumph over England in Southampton late on Wednesday night.

During the fifth over of Australia’s innings, Head struck Curran for three fours and three massive sixes, helping the Aussies to a large total of 179 at The Rose Bowl, which proved too much for the hosts, who were bowled out for only 151 in reply.

Head was at his magnificent best against England, scoring 50 in the Powerplay and combining with fellow opener Matt Short (41) to put on 86 for the opening wicket in rapid time.

According to the ICC, Australia was on course for a total in excess of 200 at one point, but Liam Livingstone (3-22) kept the tourists within reach.

Australia’s veteran seamer Josh Hazlewood (2/32) bowled brilliantly with the new ball, as did Adam Zampa (2/20) and Sean Abbott (3/28), as England offered little resistance and fell well short of the winning score.

The victory gives Australia a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, with the next match scheduled for Friday in Cardiff.

Head’s 30 runs against Curran tie an Australian men’s record for most runs from a single T20I over, joining Ricky Ponting, Daniel Christian, and Mitch Marsh as compatriots who have achieved the feat.

Samoa’s Darius Visser set the international record for most runs from one T20I over last month against Vanuatu, and 36 runs have been taken from one over on five previous occasions in men’s T20I, including Yuvraj Singh’s famous effort at the 2007 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
