New Delhi: In a major showdown, India expelled six Canadian diplomats on Monday, citing increasing diplomatic tensions with Canada.

The Ministry of External Affairs issued a formal statement naming the Canadian diplomats requested to leave the country by 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, 2024.

New Delhi expelled the diplomats, including the Acting High Commissioner Stewart Ross Wheeler, Deputy High Commissioner Patrick Hebert, and first secretaries Marie Catherine Joly, Ian Ross David Trites, Adam James Chuipka, and Paula Orjuela, all of whom played significant roles in the diplomatic mission.

Earlier this evening, the MEA announced the withdrawal of the Indian high commissioner and other diplomats after Ottawa designated them as ‘persons of interest’ in its investigation into the death of pro-Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

India firmly rejected Canada’s proposal to ‘blame’ the Indian diplomats for the fatal shooting of pro-Khalistan Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Canada, to date, has not been able to produce a shred of evidence showing India’s involvement in Nijjar’s killing.

Observers say Canada appears to have made a strategic mistake by taking the side of Nijjar, who was pro-violence and a threat to Canada’s national security.
