Media Eye News Bureau: The Maldives’ Supreme Court has decided to revoke an order to release nine high-profile political prisoners as well as arrested two top judges as well.
In a statement that was released the judges expressed that the order was being revoked “in light of the concerns raised by the President.” The decision came hours after former president Mohamed Nasheed sought India’s military intervention following the declaration of emergency by President Abdulla Yameen.
The detained judges were accused by the President of plotting to overthrow him and added that the chief justice was trying to illegally impeach him as he explained in a statement that, “I had to declare a national emergency because there was no other way to investigate these judges.” He added, “We had to find out how thick the plot or coup was.”
India has been keeping a close watch on the political turmoil that has risen in the Maldives as well. A statement was issued by the Ministry of External Affairs that said, “We are disturbed by the declaration of a State of Emergency in the Maldives following the refusal of the government to abide by the unanimous ruling of the full bench of the Supreme Court on February 1, and also by the suspension of constitutional rights of the people of Maldives. The arrest of the Supreme Court Chief Justice and political figures are also reasons for concern.”
Citizens of India have also been advised not to undertake non- essential travels to the island nation until further notice as well.
