New Delhi: In response to wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s tragic disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the setback stings and that he is at a loss for words over the sense of grief he was feeling.

His words, a testament to his leadership, were a source of encouragement for Phogat, reminding her that she had the unwavering support of the entire nation.

“Vinesh, you are a champion among champions! You are India’s pride and an inspiration for every Indian. Today’s setback hurts. I wish words could express the sense of despair that I am experiencing,” PM Modi said on his X handle.

PM Modi also hailed Phogat’s resilience and lauded her for taking challenges head-on.

“I know that you epitomise resilience. It has always been your nature to take challenges head-on. “Come back stronger! We are all rooting for you,” PM Modi further said.

Notably, Vinesh Phogat advanced to the final round of the women’s 50 kg category, guaranteeing herself at least a silver medal. In her opening match, she defeated Yui Susaki, the world No. 1 and four-time world champion from Japan, who had won gold in the Olympics.

Nevertheless, the wrestler is no longer eligible to compete for an Olympic medal because she was unable to clear the 50 kg barrier for women. The 29-year-old’s weight exceeded the 50 kg weight restriction by 150 grams.

She is no longer eligible to compete. She has lost the confirmed silver medal and is not allowed to compete in the final round.
Vinesh was to compete against Sarah Hildebrandt of the USA for the gold medal.

“It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s wrestling 50 kg class,” the Indian Olympic Association said in a release.
