New Delhi: Media reports said the Indian government granted former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina an interim stay on Monday after her government collapsed in the South Asian country of Bangladesh.

According to Daily Sun, as Hasina seeks asylum in the UK, India will provide full logistical support during this time.

Her move to Britain is still pending. Thus, her stay in India is only authorised temporarily.

Travelling through India to London, Hasina tendered her resignation on Monday amid historic demonstrations against her government.

According to Daily Sun, the UK government has not yet confirmed that the former prime minister of Bangladesh has been granted political refuge.

Hasina is currently applying for asylum in the UK, accompanied by her UK-citizen sister Rehana.

Rehana, the younger daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the “Father of Bangladesh,” and Sheikh Fazilatun Necha Mujib, is also the younger sister of Sheikh Hasina. Her daughter, Tulip Siddiq, serves as a member of the British Parliament representing the Labour Party.

Meanwhile, Indian official sources informed us that New Delhi was monitoring the rapid changes in Dhaka closely.

Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman of the Bangladesh Army announced in Dhaka that Hasina had resigned and that an interim administration was taking over.

“I’m taking all responsibility (of the country). Please cooperate,” he said in a televised address.

The Army Chief said he had met political leaders and told them the Army would assume command of law and order.

Over the past two days, rallies against the Hasina government have claimed the lives of over 100 individuals.
