Sydney: A woman was injured after being mauled by a tiger at a theme park in Queensland, Australia, on Monday. However, she was lucky that the attack was not fatal.

According to a representative for the Queensland Ambulance Service, paramedics were dispatched to Dreamworld at 9 a.m. local time on Monday after a tiger-related incident.

They claimed an animal handler in her 30s received multiple deep cuts and scratches to her arm and was transferred to a local hospital in stable condition.

Dreamworld, Australia’s largest theme park, is 50 kilometres south of Brisbane’s state capital.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation said it is home to nine Sumatran and Bengal tigers.

A Dreamworld spokeswoman emphasised that the victim, an animal handler, was trained and experienced in handling tigers, which makes this incident even more unexpected.

“Dreamworld’s immediate focus is on the support of the team member,” they said. “This was an isolated and rare incident, and we will conduct a thorough review accordingly.”

Incidentally, this is not the first time Dreamworld has been in the news for an adverse incident. In October 2016, four individuals died at the same theme park after a water ride malfunctioned. In 2020, the park’s operator was fined 3.6 million Australian dollars ($2.4 million) after pleading guilty to safety charges in connection with the deaths.
