New Delhi: On Tuesday, the Supreme Court revoked the contempt order against Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna, the managing director of Patanjali Ayurved, for the company’s persistent dissemination of deceptive advertising.

A bench of Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah postponed their decision in the contempt proceedings on May 14, eliminating Ramdev and Balkrishna’s in-person appearance in further hearings.

During a previous hearing, the Supreme Court turned down Ramdev and Balkrishna’s “unconditional and unqualified apology” and expressed strong disapproval for their breach of the pledge they made to the court in November of last year.

Prior to this, Patanjali had assured the Supreme Court that it would not make false statements about the therapeutic effectiveness of its goods, advertise or brand them illegally, or comment on the media criticising any medical system.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has sought action against Patanjali for violating the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954, which prohibits the advertisement of certain products for the treatment of specified diseases and disorders, including diabetes, heart diseases, high or low blood pressure, and obesity.

Last week, the top court ordered IMA President Dr. R.V. Asokan to use his finances to publicly apologise in major newspapers for his disrespectful remarks.

During Patanjali’s deceptive advertisement case against practitioners of allopathy, Dr Asokan described the oral observations made by the top court as “unfortunate” and a “very vague and general statement which has demoralised the doctors” in an interview with a media outlet.
