New Delhi/Agartala: In a historic peace milestone, the Centre, Tripura administration, and the two insurgent factions—the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF)—will sign a Memorandum of Settlement in Delhi on Wednesday.

An official statement read, “In the presence of Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, a Memorandum of Settlement is to be signed among Government of India, Government of Tripura and representatives of National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF), in New Delhi on Wednesday, 04 September 2024. Officials said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, and the senior officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Tripura government would remain present in the agreement signing ceremony, to be held in the North Block on Wednesday afternoon.”

A Tripura government official stated that on August 10, 2019, a tripartite agreement was made in New Delhi between the Centre, the Tripura administration, and a faction of the NLFT.

Following the agreement, 88 NLFT cadres surrendered to the Tripura government and handed over weapons and ammunition.

The official stated that the surrendered cadres received benefits under the MHA’s Surrender-cum-Rehabilitation Scheme, 2018.

The Tripura government assisted the surrendered cadres with accommodation, recruitment for government positions, education, and skill development training.

Since 1997, both the NLFT and the ATTF have been prohibited under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act because they have been involved in violence and operate from camps across international borders.

During the period 2005-2015, the two outfits were responsible for deadly operations, including a huge number of insurgent episodes in which numerous security forces and civilians were killed.

Peace talks with NLFT began in 2015, and the significant reduction in serious violence by NLFT since 2016 is a reassuring sign of the positive impact of these talks on the region’s security.

According to an official statement, the MHA has worked tirelessly to achieve Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed northeast free from extremism, bloodshed, and war. This relentless effort instills hope and optimism for the region’s peaceful and prosperous future.

Under the Prime Minister’s guidance, the government has signed 12 key accords to foster peace and prosperity in the northeast, three of which involve the state of Tripura. This commitment to peace and prosperity is inspiring and deserves the audience’s support.

The Modi government’s signature of multiple accords has resulted in approximately 10,000 cadres giving up arms and joining the mainstream in various northeastern states, including Assam and Tripura.
