Fifty people were killed and many others injured when a train ran into a crowd celebrating Dussehra in Punjab’s Joda Phatak, close to Amritsar, subdivisional magistrate Rajesh Sharma said. The crowd was watching a Ravana effigy burn nearby around 7pm, additional district commissioner of police, city-2, Lakhbir Singh said. Some were standing on the track shooting videos of the effigy burning on their mobile phones when the train hit them. Authorities have rushed to the spot of the accident.
