Mumbai, Dec 20: According to a Wall Street Journal released today, Apple is in talks with the Indian Government to manufacture I Phones locally in India in order to make deeper inroads into the Indian markets which is also the second largest mobile phone market in the world.

With the Prime Minister pushing the agenda for digital India as well as the make in India the Apple agenda should not be very difficult to pass provided that Indian requirements are kept in mind by the Silicon Valley giant. The present government recently exempted foreign retailers for three years from a requirement to locally source 30% of the products sold in their stores.

The Journal further stated that Apple has written a letter to the central government outlining its manufacturing plans along with asking for financial incentives.

While Government officials were unavailable for comments, Apple Inc too has not responded to an email sent by Reuters seeking further comment. Local manufacturing will help Apple open retail stores in the country where the iPhones are not very popular.
