It’s a united front, as various organisations nationwide have come together to call for a Bharat Bandh (an all-India shutdown of services and businesses) on Wednesday, August 21st, 2024.
Recently, the Supreme Court granted permission to create sub-categories within SC/ST reservations, for which the ‘Aarakshan Bachao Sangharsh Samiti’, an organisation dedicated to preserving and advocating for reservations, has supported Bharat Bandh.
On Aug. 1, the Supreme Court’s ruling that states must identify the ‘creamy layer’ within the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and exclude them from receiving quota benefits has sent shockwaves. The ‘creamy layer’ refers to economically and socially well-off individuals within these reserved categories.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured a group of BJP MPs belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities that no ‘creamy layer’ distinctions would be applied within the quota of jobs and seats in educational institutions reserved for SCs.
The ruling to exclude the ‘creamy layer’ from the SC/ST quota has sparked significant controversy and opposition. Many argue that this decision could further marginalise the already disadvantaged communities, leading to calls for protests across the country.
